Questions people ask
- Do I charge British Columbia's rate if my business is in another province?
- It depends on the place of supply, not where you are. Goods generally follow where they are delivered, and most services follow the customer's address. An Ontario business selling a taxable service to a customer in British Columbia generally charges 5% GST, and PST only if registered for it.
- Do I have to charge GST/HST at all?
- Not while you are a small supplier: under $30,000 of taxable sales in the last four calendar quarters. Once you pass that, you must register and start charging. You can also register earlier by choice.
- Does my GST/HST number cover PST?
- No. PST is separate and run by the BC Ministry of Finance, with its own rules on who must register and what is taxed.
