Rates in Ontario
| Tax | Rate | Goes to |
|---|---|---|
| HST | 13% | CRA |
- Ontario's 13% HST is 5% federal and 8% provincial, collected together as one tax and reported on your GST/HST return to CRA.
- Some items, such as books and children's clothing, get a point-of-sale rebate of the 8% provincial part.
Questions people ask
- Do I charge Ontario's rate if my business is in another province?
- It depends on the place of supply, not where you are. Goods generally follow where they are delivered, and most services follow the customer's address. An Ontario business selling a taxable service to a customer in Ontario generally charges 13% HST.
- Do I have to charge GST/HST at all?
- Not while you are a small supplier: under $30,000 of taxable sales in the last four calendar quarters. Once you pass that, you must register and start charging. You can also register earlier by choice.
