Get paid by Interac e-Transfer
What to put on the invoice so e-Transfers arrive, why auto-deposit helps, and how to match the payment to the invoice.
Interac e-Transfer is how most small businesses in Canada get paid. The invoice does the work. If the instructions are unclear, payment stalls or goes to the wrong inbox.
What to put on the invoice
- The email or mobile number linked to the account that receives the money.
- The name on the account, so the customer knows it is going to the right place.
- The amount in Canadian dollars.
- The invoice number, to type in the message, so you can match the money to the invoice.
- A security question only if you don't have auto-deposit. Never put the answer on the invoice.
Turn on auto-deposit
With auto-deposit, money lands straight in your account with no security question. It can't be guessed or intercepted, and customers don't get stuck. Set it up in your online banking.
If you keep a question, share the answer by phone or a separate message.
Limits
Each bank sets its own limits on how much a customer can send per transfer, per day and per week. For large invoices, agree on another method, like a bank transfer, or split the payment.
In CollabNorth
Save your e-Transfer email, account name and optional security question in Settings, then Open business setup. Every invoice shows the same instructions.
Customers can tell you they have paid from the invoice link. You get an alert, check your bank, and confirm. CollabNorth never handles the money. It moves straight from your customer's bank to yours.
When it arrives, record the payment or match it from a bank import.
Does e-Transfer change the tax?
No. How you get paid doesn't change GST/HST, QST, PST or RST. Tax depends on what you sold and where.
